Mermaid diving is a world with one foot in reality and the other in fantasy. Mermaid lore originated centuries ago, yet even today, the myths tickle our imaginations. Water lovers, young and old, fantasize about living as mermaids – but unlike most such fantasies, this one we can make real – well, almost real. Mermaid equipment and costuming let us bridge fiction and fact, opening the door to this mystical culture through mermaid diving.
The PADI Mermaid Program is designed to be a rewarding and fun experience, suited to anyone with an interest in mermaid diving and basic swimming abilities. Although this experience shares techniques and equipment used in scuba and freediving, mermaid diving (or ‘mermaiding’) is its own form of diving. The PADI Mermaid Program is designed for non-divers and divers alike, as you don’t need any prior knowledge to enroll.
Introduction to Freediving
The PADI Mermaid Program is great for Freediving beginners. Participants can expect to learn buoyancy, apnea, and other techniques that are a great start for those interested in Freediving.
Ocean Conservation
The origin of the word “mermaid” is literally “maid of the sea”. Mermaiding is a sport that not only includes diving techniques it also impersonates both the beauty and mission of mermaids. What is a mermaid’s mission? To protect the ocean! Exploring ocean-conservation courses allows participants to learn how they can impact the ocean.
A Unique Fun Experience
The PADI Mermaid course provides a unique experience that is filled with fun and excitement. It makes dreams come true and allows the participant to dive in an ocean of adventure. Our oceans are essen-shell to our planet, and as PADI Mermaids it is our duty to advocate for it.
What PADI Mermaid Courses Are Available?
The PADI Mermaid Program consists of four levels:
The PADI Discover Mermaid Experience introduces simple mermaid activities in confined water, shallow enough in which to stand. It is designed as a flexible and brief program that lets you try mermaiding to see what all the fuss is about.
The PADI Basic Mermaid Course combines learning supporting knowledge and principles with a confined water skill development session to introduce the fun of fundamental mermaid diving, covering everything from mermaid diving’s background and culture through to equipment and basic water skills.
The PADI Mermaid Course has at least two water sessions: the Basic Mermaid session plus an additional session, which adds more dynamic mermaid skills. Many of these are the expressive, fun skills that separate mermaid diving from other types of diving, and include several that are sure to impress an audience.
The PADI Advanced Mermaid Course includes all of the skills you’ll master in the PADI Mermaid course, plus two additional sessions in open water – that is, a natural, local body of water, or purpose-built site, significantly larger than a pool, suited to mermaid diving – making your mermaid dives even closer to what we imagine when we think about how mermaiding would be in nature.
There are also instructor and instructor training courses available for mermaids who want to go pro!
With the PADI Mermaid Program, everyone can become a mermaid and I cannot wait to see this industry growing. If you love mermaids and ever wished to become one, trust me, now is the mer-fect time to do it!
